We’re tapping into the thermal energy reserves beneath Kaiserslautern!
Through our investigations into the geothermal potential beneath Kaiserslautern, we are aiming to decarbonise our district heating supply.
Geothermal energy is a regional and reliable source of the large quantities of heat that will be needed in the future. Pfälzer
Wärme is therefore exploring the medium-depth and deep subsurface in search of aquiferous rock layers. In a second stage, these could be developed using hydrothermal geothermal energy and utilised to supply local heating for future generations.
Our vision
A vast reservoir of heat lies dormant beneath the Palatinate. We aim to tap into this local energy source for you, in order to switch our town’s district heating supply to an energy source that is independent of weather conditions and fuel imports, and is therefore price-stable. To this end, we have secured two exploration fields so that we can remain in control and do not have to rely on external project developers. Geothermal energy is available round the clock and is a reliable alternative to fossil fuels.
It is up to us to tap into this valuable resource beneath our feet and to supply you with geothermal district heating by 2027. In doing so, we are drawing on technology that has been tried and tested for many years and is already being used successfully for district heating at over 100 sites across Central Europe. Even the Romans knew how to harness the earth’s heat in thermal baths. Over the coming months, we will explore this potential for you and then, in all likelihood, tap into it through drilling, just as the company Wipotec has been doing for many years in Kaiserslautern, thereby securing jobs, the local economy and competitiveness.
